Nikon announces the 24 1.4 lens. Finally! Also, the 16-35 F4!

FINALLY! Nikon has announced the 24 1.4 G ED wide angle professional prime lens. I have always said that Nikon desperately needed some fast primes and if this is the shape of things to come from Nikon then look out Canon! You can read all about the new lens at the Nikon website HERE. B&H Photo have listed it on their site but it is not yet available to pre-order. Nikon has also announced the 16-35 F4 lens with info HERE. B&H Photo also has this one listed at $1249 and coming soon.

I am guessing that these new lenses will be pretty nice but the one that does it for me is the 24 1.4. If Nikon releases a D700x with similar ISO performance of the D3s then look out, we will start seeing a whole new wave of photos taken in the dark 🙂

I applaud Nikon here and if I were a Nikon shooter, I would buy this lens NO DOUBT! The 24 1.4 is coming in at $2,199. Not cheap, but not as expensive as the Leica 24 1.4. When this lens is released I will be getting one to test and I can not wait!

  1. Hi Steve-

How about a D700 24/1.4 vs M9 24/1.4 comparison, could it be possible?
I would like to see what is missing on th Nikon option, in other words, how to see that Leica glow…

Thanks, I follow you blog daily.
    Keep on it, is great.

  2. I’ve been shooting ( http://bit.ly/dkb8ar ) my D300 with a Sigma 30mm F1.4 for a year (or so) now – and I’m LOVING it, it’s a nice (relatively) affordable lens… I’ve been contemplating an upgrade to a D700x (when and if it arrives!) but then the Sigma won’t cut it as it’s a DX lens.

I’d love to see a “crazy comparison” between a DX camera with the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and a FX camera with the new Nikon 24 f1.4.

  3. Hey Roger,

You can see everything I own in the “My Gear” page. I do not own any DSLR’s as I find them too large. My son has a D3000, and my wife the E-P2 but that’s about it!

  4. In my quest to slow down my picture taking ligthen up and simplify, I looked into the Canon 24 F1.4. The lense is 650g the Nikon is 620 same 77mm filter size…Huge. This is why the Dslr is going and the 8.2 is coming with a cron 35… Light, simple and it gives me the chance to buy a lense a year. When the quiver is complte it Will be time to invest in a Ff body (m10?)…SLR gear is just top big

  5. I thougth Canon already has the 24mm f/1.4 lens. Not sure what is the difference between the new Nikon lens and the 24L II. Pricewise, the Nikon is about double of the Canon lens.

  6. Love it. But it is HUGE !

I find myself liking Leica more and more these days. I’m not a pro sports photographer , paparazzi or news journo..

These days, small, light and unobtrusive is what tempts me.

  7. Hi guys

I’ve been waiting for this lens for too long. I even very nearly bought the older AF version which was running at silly amounts of money. Lucky. This announcement has made my M9 order even *more* special. The more images I see from M9s, the deeper in love I fall with that special look. Can’t wait to get it so I can start snapping my own.

    Cheers
    Adam

  8. I’m a Nikon shooter who has slowly been building up a Leica M9 fund after placing my order last month. I was afraid Nikon would release something like this. It’s the one I’ve been waiting for, so Nikon did not do me any favors today. I want this lens! The M9 fund is now in serious jeopardy.
