It never ends! Here is the official press release from Fuji. Also, if this site is running slow for you today I am working on the server to make it faster! I am aware of the site outages and slowdowns today. Thank you!

More info on this camera can now be seen at Fuji’s official page HERE.

OFFICIAL – The Fuji  X-Pro 1 Press Release

Fujifilm is proud to announce the new model changes the rules in the new interchangeable lens system: Fujifilm X-Pro1. This camera is aimed at a professional audience and advanced amateurs and incorporates advanced technologies such as Trans-X’s unique sensor CMOSTM megapixel APS-C 16, a new X port for mounting the lens, a viewfinder and three hybrid optical the base.

X-Pro1 sets new standards in image resolution

For this camera, Fujifilm has developed a new CMOS sensor called X-TransTM CMOSTM which is able to provide a response similar to that of a sensor “full frame”.
The new array (CFA – Color Filter Array) opens the way for an ideal sensor that does not require an optical low-pass filter. This filter is in fact essential for the reduction of false colors and moiré generated by conventional sensors, but at the same time, also degrades the resolution. Fujifilm has developed a new matrix that is inspired by the CFA random arrangement of the grain in the film, eliminating the need for optical low-pass filter to solve the problems of false colors and moiré. In the matrix, RGB pixels are arranged in groups of 6×6 pixels with high aperiodicity (randomness).

Increasing the degree of randomness eliminates the root cause of the false color and moiré, a problem that occurs in conventional matrix elements during the filming of rows and other repeating patterns. The presence of a pixel R, G and B in each series of horizontal and vertical pixels minimizes the generation of false colors and provides superior color reproduction themselves.
The use of a matrix inspired by the film has necessitated a more powerful processor to process image data for this FUJIFILM EXR Processor Pro has created this project to optimize the potential of the Trans-X sensor CMOSTM providing high speed and high-precision image processing.

Fujinon XF for the best image quality

The Fujinon lenses used for television broadcasts and medium format cameras, have always been associated with high image quality. All the experience in the design of the optics has been used in the study phase of the objectives dedicated to X-Pro1.
The targets are launched with the machine, and three are part of the new XF series Fujinon: “XF 18mm F2 R”, “XF 35mm F1, 4 R” and “R XF 60mm F2 Macro 4”. These objectives are compact, very bright and offer precise control over depth of field effect and the possibility out-of-focus bokeh thanks to the design of the curved blades of the diaphragm. The slats are curved to create a circular image at all apertures, while the edges of each blade is carefully rounded for a sharper image.
The feeling of solidity and the precise mechanics of optics will satisfy the desire of photographers to capture multiple images with every shot.

FUJIFILM Attack “X-Mount” to maximize performance

Designed specifically to maximize the design “mirrorless” of the body, X-mount flange has a short distance posterior to the sensor plane, equal to only 17.7 mm. This means that the rear lens as close as possible to the sensor. The wide opening allows you to attach the lens deeper inside the body – up to about 7.5 mm from the mounting surface – minimizing the distance of “back focus” of each lens for high resolution to the edge of the image.

Hybrid Multi Viewfinder

FUJIFILM’s revolutionary hybrid viewfinder appeared first in the X100. With its ability to instantly switch between optical viewfinder and an electronic viewfinder, the viewfinder hybrid has added a new dimension to the pleasure of composing photographs.
The user may choose to use, depending on your mood or need, depending on the optical viewfinder for a picture as real as possible and have all the information electronically in real time. The advantage of hybrid viewfinder is the ability to combine the two technologies to get the ultimate in visual quality and functionality, allowing you to place the composition of images through a bright viewfinder and offering the ability to overlay important information for the release of photos. The change from a crosshair to another is easy, thanks to the switch on the front of the body of the X-Pro1.
When mounting a Fujinon lens on the X Series XF-Pro1 in the viewfinder magnification and size of the light frame automatically change to support its focal length. The viewfinder magnification, equal to 0.37 for x and 0.60 x 18mm lens for the 35mm and 60mm, allows you to compose the scene with the brilliant optical clarity and sharpness of an image. The X-Pro1 also gives the freedom to manually set the focal distance and switch to another magnification of the viewfinder.

Technology and careful design

The top and bottom made of aluminum alloy die-cast and hand enameled precise engravings on the top and the camera lens, point to the fact that all the X-Pro1 is built with attention to detail and uncompromising quality .
This attention to detail extends to dial in shutter speed and exposure compensation control, precisely machined from solid metal. In addition, the locking mechanism and the shutter switch exposure compensation set back, are designed to prevent accidental change of settings. The edges of the selectors have a knurled finish, knurled detail, for a grip and an excellent feeling.
The seal “Made in Japan” also present on the body of the new X-PRO1, confirming that each part of the building meets the highest standards FUJIFILM.
The lens hood with precision knurled aluminum, supplied with the lens is designed exclusively for Fujinon XF. The hood is compact and lightweight and offers excellent performance with a design that perfectly matches the style of X-Pro1.
The diameter of the aperture ring and focus of the three interchangeable lenses Fujinon XF is only slightly larger than the diameter of the objective to standardize the elegant design. The precise machining of the metal, the reassuring click each picture to the aperture ring and a comfortable pair of resistance when using manual focus, contributing together to improve the shooting experience.
The coating of X-Pro1 was designed to be weather resistant and provide a look of quality. The body of X-Pro1 was designed for the complete comfort of the photographer, the natural form of the eyepiece also provides excellent protection from light. The viewfinder you can use an additional lens (optional) for diopter adjustment.

Fujifilm continues the myth of the films

Further improvements have been made to the options Film Simulation Mode with the new “Professional Color Negative Film Modes” (Pro Neg. Neg Standard and Pro. Hi) designed for users who work in the studio with the X-Pro1. If you want to take the same scene in different film simulation modes, X-Pro1 offers the option of bracketing “Film Simulation”, along with AE Bracketing, Dynamic and ISO.
Fujifilm has also included the Film Simulation mode by which X-Pro1 simulates the color and tonal qualities of popular FUJIFILM emulsions. These include the colors of Velvia, the skin tones soft and natural look of the ASTIA TEST.
Pro1-X allows you to use special color filters to expand the photographic interpretation: to increase the contrast with the yellow and red filter, make brighter green and red filter with the deepest green. Just as professional photographers when selecting a filter paper and printing to complement their creative vision, now you can easily adjust the image quality with these filters. For those who wish to achieve a more nostalgic is also a sepia filter.
Through advanced digital processing, X-Pro1 is able to simulate the multiple-exposure technique: simply select this mode and the first shot. In the hybrid viewfinder or LCD you can see what the end result and then framing the precise second shot.

A series of exclusive accessories

The handle HG-XPro1 optional, helps balance the weight of the camera, allowing a more comfortable grip and offers a uniform look to the lines of X-Pro1.
The Flash EF-X20 option, to be mounted on the hot shoe is designed as a complementary accessory to the X-Pro1. A switch lets you choose between two modes: AUTO, which automatically optimizes the flash to daylight for outdoor and indoor shooting in low light; MANUAL for manual control. In addition, the built-in speaker, easy to use, it helps to soften the effect of excessive contrast created by the flash.
The leather case LC-XPro1 optional *, X-shaped to protect Pro1, is designed to allow quick access to the camera. Particular attention was paid to every detail: the red interior that contrasts with the black leather exterior, the accuracy of the stitching and the adoption of a magnet hidden for closure. This beautiful case is completed with the inclusion of a genuine leather strap and a protective cap bellows for different optics.
Filter Protector and Protector Filter φ39mm φ52mm optional protective filters are dedicated to the new XF goals. Super EBC treatment of these filters effectively reduces reflected light. The ring of the filter, made with a special process, fits the overall design of the optics.

Fujifilm and X-lenses Pro1 18mm F2 R XF, XF 35mm F1, 4 R and R XF 60mm F2 Macro 4 will be on sale from March 2012.

  1. I had my eye on both the X10 and the X100, but they are both far too expensive and they have their pproblems. I do like the Xpro 1 , but it is a very silly price! Maybe when they get the cameras sorted out and get a decent reliable model on the shelves, and at a sensible price.

At the moment Fujifilm cameras are over priced and far too expensive 🙁

  2. I’m interest about the new X lens quality
would be some “crazy” combine between NEX body and the X lens
    stay tune 🙂

  3. Love the specs and innovation. Looks and sound spot-on.

Looking for people / portrait image samples. Anyone come across any? Comments around the web re. “same or better than FF image quality” has me hooked.

Anyway, anyone annoyed by the hand grip? Looks so ugly on a otherwise stunning designed camera. Usability wise i am sure it makes sense 🙂

  4. Hi Steve,
What would your expert recommendation be –
A mint second hand m8+ mint second hand summicron 50/35 or the new fujix1p and the 3 lenses?
Considering both will roughly have the same price, both are crop sensors and both have their pros and cons ( the m8 has ease of use: aperture, shutter speed, EV+-, ISO, focus : what you compose is what you get while the x1p has a plethora of menus to help you ” get it right” not to mention the macro aspect)
The aim would be the results in real life and enjoying the process of photography.
Cameras come and go but isn’t that the joy of taking photos the eventual goal for all.
Looks like a perfect case for one of your crazy comparisons.
    Keep up the good work!!
    Cheers!!

    • Hard to say as no one has used the Fuji yet but my money is on the Fuji. Why? Well, latest sensor tech and the high ISO looks incredible from what I have seen. The M8 high ISO is NOT good and even 1250 is VERY tough to pull off. The X1Pro also has ease of use it appears with the Aperture on the lenses, hybrid EVF, etc. Lenses look great and and M8 with 35 and 50 cron would set you back around $6k, used prices. The Fuji and 3 lenses around $3k. In this day and age, as much as I love the Leica M, the M8 with its not so hot Low Light performance and need for IR/UV filters AND the fact that it goes out of adjustment occasionally (and it will eventually) – $6000 vs $3000 sounds like a no brainer. Then again if the Fuji is a mess, then I would think differently. We shall see!

  5. One thing I know for sure:I love my x100 but fuji won’t get my money a second time for this sexy, great to use x1pro … Sony’s nex7 will be far more reliable in my opinion.

  6. do the fuji guys actually work for Fuji? They are wearing the shirts- with logo’s- and they keep saying ‘we designed’ this or ‘we did’ that?

next- does the X1pro have a shutter? In every video you can see the sensor when the lens is removed? And I have heard nothing- but does it have ultrasonic sensor cleaning?

  7. AF :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXL_YraX8dc

    2min af speed

AF seems as fast as X10 which if it is, is some going
given X10 2/3″is much smaller sensor & fast CDAF on small sensor is a lot easier.

    Shows the cool multi exposure.

3min07- turn on ready to shoot time fast

3min49 cntniuous shootin raw+jpeg on class 10 sdhc (not sdxs uhs) seems as X10 10fps
    (more than stated 6fps).

No button lock while writing single raw files.

Shutter sound as expected focal plane shutter is not as quiet as X100 leaf shutter, more as X10 electronic shutter.
It is quieter than e-pen, nex, m8,m9.

    • AF

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ChjzvHPOq4

      4min55

Imo not as fast as Ep3, V1 as to be expected. It seems as fast as X10 (2/3), which is really good going for an apsc cdaf.

Important is focus integrity : accuracy of focus.
If XP1 takes just a few more millisecs than EP3, V1 to nail AF so be it.

5min40 continuous shooting & shutter sound.
6min05 X100 shutter with soft release. X-P1 shutter without soft release sounds pretty close to X100.

      • Tbh

Metal X 35mm f1.4 is a damn lot quieter than canons 50mmf1.4 usm
& by the looks of it performs AF as well in such indoor lights.

EP3, V1 plastic lenses are easy to move for AF.

  8. Wait. Isn’t SOMEBODY going to say, “Too big. Can’t put it in my pocket. Total fail.”

    Somebody ALWAYS says that.

  9. Fuji just published the lens road map for the X-Pro for the next 2 years ! Looks good to me 🙂
    Quote:
    ***************
    (To supplement the 18mm F2.0, 35mm F1.4 and 60mm F2.4 Macro already announced)

    2012:

    14mm f/2.8
    18-72mm f/4.0 with Image Stabilization
    2013:

    28mm f/2.8 pancake
    23mm f/2.0
    72-200mm f/4.0 Image Stabilization
    12-24mm f/4.0 Image Stabilization

  10. Any word on when this might be released? I have the lenses pre-ordered (I think-at least that’s what it shows) on Amazon. The camera body is on “notification” status.
Thanks again for all of your information.

  11. thanks! 🙂
one question: is there a chance (left aside the feeling being unnatural, which blows ofc!) that you can see in which direction to twist the barrel (a la m9, where you can see the square on each side knowing where to turn the focus ring)? meaning: do i only get an information if i m in focus or is it possible to see if i set my focus to close or behind the point i want to focus on? if not you are kinda left with no clue with a rangefinder… can t see what s in focus right now and what isn’t… no idea where to turn the focus ring to hoping that suddenly you hear the confirmation beep.. this would be a big bummer for me and my hopes for a cheaper ‘leica’ would be destroyed again, meaning i d have to save more cash for a whilen! 😉

  12. i think the ccd sensor plays a moderate role in M9 sharpness image quality. i doubt xpro1 CMOS sensor can surpass full frame image quality

  13. Thanks for this Steve – I have preorder the body and 35mm F1.4 lens. I also own the Ricoh GXR with M Mount. Interestingly, the sensor size for both are similar : 23.6 mm x 15.6 mm v 23.6 mm x 15.7 mm. Great news about the AA filter or lack thereof. Do we know if the image sensor utilises micro lenses?

  14. Looks like Panasonic is being left behind. Olympus, depends on the rumors of the upcoming OM-like camera in Feb + high-iso image issues.

The best news: looks like it is finally time to say goodbye to DSLRs.

  15. Three areas where XP-1 will rival or outperform current FF dslrs

    1. Per pixel level sharpness : due to no AA filter will be sharper than 1DX, D4. We have seen this in Kodak FF slrs, M8, M9,Sigma.

    2. Dynamic range : S5 pro was a legend. X-P1 with its EXR processor will go beyond S5 pro. We know from Fuji X10 EXR DR 400% was already almost as S5pro and quite a bit beyond any camera in its class. Married with an aps-c EXR DR 400% will be stunning in DR & exposure recovery beyond 1DX, D4.

    3. High ISO low noise : we have already seen what the Sony5n sensor can do,we have already seen what EXR SN low noise mode can do on Fuji compacts. Fujis X-Trans combined with EXR will give what the D3s gives.
Remains to be seen how X-P1 high iso low noise does compared to 1Dx, D4.

EXR processors also have a tendency to make images look more analogue.
M8, M9,1Ds3, 1D4, D3/s/x all have that digital sterile harshness.

    • If it is indeed the Sony 16MP (with Fuji custom CFA)
5n, K5, D7000 should be an indicator (of DR & high iso low noise) augmented with EXR.

Clarity & sharpness indicator Ricoh GXR AA filterless M-mount.

  16. OK….here’s my prediction……
Fuji did not release the X-Pro as a full frame camera because…….wait for it……they are going to be the new sensor supplier for Leica! Am I crazy?? I don’t think I am. Think about it, Kodak is bankrupt and Leica can’t make their sensor in-house so they give the contract to Fuji…..the catch being that Fuji agrees to not make a direct full frame rangefinder style competitor…..so here we have the APS-C sensor in the X-Pro1. If you guys are waiting around for a full frame version of the xpro with another setvof lenses….keep dreaming it isn’t going to happen.

Maybe I’m wrong….but you never know!

    • Kodak spun off the sensor business before the latest news into its own (and profitable, reportedly) biz. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they went ith someone else – If I were Leica I’d license the viewfinder tech from Fuji too

  17. Not sure about all the M9 comparisons. It may resemble an M9 but not even close. .. and I don’t mean image quality. M9 is a rangefinder and the main quality next to the FF sensor… then of course the lenses with their true FF focal lengths.
If I could adapt my lenses and retain the true FF focal length equivalent then my ears would perk up a little more.

EP3, NEX7, X100 and now this.. we are moving in the right direction. I love all the techi features and hope the M10 comes with a few goodies.. sorry purist that’s what I want.

  18. Hiya Steve ,
First of all, thanks for your dedication, it heats our passion, you are good, very good.
I´ve been surprise by this new Fuji launch, (probably I´m bit far away were the good things happened )
This new creature will relax my anxiety in buying a M9.
Looking forward to your next test.
North of Spain is green and wet, just you and me and the wall.
    Cheers.

  19. It’s contrast AF according to the specs I read on DPreview, unless I am missing something – pray it’s at least as fast (or close to) the Panny or the Olys – then no issue. With contrast accuracy is usually spot on.

  20. I feel like an idiot having bagged the camera as ugly. In my defence I was going off one leaked photo that seems to be a stretched front on photo. Clearly from the official photos this is a very nice looking camera, and I badly want one now. LOL.

  21. Electronically controlled aperture & focus if it is as the Diglux2 lens will be real nice.
    I hope it is.
Gen 2 hybrid VF looks a killer.
OVF 0.60 mag is almost as M9 0.62.

OVF will take uwa lens 14mm cool.
    EVF any focal length

Not having leaf shutter in lens means hopefully no lens issues as X100.
Hope the focal plane shutter is quiet.

No mention of AF speed nor if it is hybrid PDAF CDAF.
Looks as though PDAF for shooting, CDAF live view & evf.

“The Fujinon lenses used for television broadcasts and medium format cameras, have always been associated with high image quality. All the experience in the design of the optics has been used in the study phase of the objectives dedicated to X-Pro1.”
    Yaaaay.

    $1300-$1700 better be with 35mm f1.4

  22. This will not be a M9 killer, but definitely shade the light for those who can’t afford a Leica. If Fuji comes out its own M-mount adapter (rumor says it, not confirm yet), then the waiting period of Leica lenses will be forever.
FF? Let’s see at the end of this year. Maybe there is something of it……………

    • While I think most people want an M9 and will settle for this Fuji, a person could make a very real case that this Fuji is actually the better camera regardless of price. Just the simple fact that it’s free of the lens restraints the M9 is huge. Fuji has only 3 primes at launch, but two more lenses are coming this year, including a zoom and an ultrawide prime (which obviously won’t require an external VF), and I believe they said 9 more lenses in 2013. While I know the Fuji isn’t a rangefinder, I really believe that if Leica were starting on the M system from scratch today the X-Pro1 is what they’d come up with (well, but with distinct Leica styling).

I hope Leica keeps on producing the M9 as is (just like they do the M7), but perphaps the M10 or a digital Leica CL should incorporate some of the features from the Fuji X-Pro. Purity is great, but not all technology is bad. Is anyone really bothered by aperture priority mode on their M’s for example? A hybrid VF is just one more step Leica needs to take IMO. Imagine, finally an M with a macro lens 🙂

      • +1 Eric, well said. Leica seems so scared of automation that they leave out even basic features. Whats wrong with aperture priority mode….AND a dedicated exposure compensation dial??? Leica sticks to the purist concept to their own detriment. I love my M8, but it could be so much better. Seems to me that Fuji built the camera a lot of us wanted…..a digital version of the Contax G2 (let’s just hope the AF is better lol).

        • +1 on the digital G2.

Leica added a light meter to the M cameras 15 or 20 years after everyone else had one, AND they charged an additional thousand dollars for it, at a time when the most expensive hand held meter you could buy was about $100.

Leica provides superb manufacturing quality but they only innovate when their feet are held to the fire.

Personally, I hope the new Fuji is really good, sells a ton, and dents Leica sales enough to get them off the dime.

  23. nice looking gadget (camera) but fuji’s trying to rob us on there prices …absurd price’s on all models , thanks ill pass …ill stick with my canon 7d & my little sigma dp 2 s

    • I never understood the Canon 7d myself, it’s dropped in price a bit now but it always seemed like too much $ for not much camera, in the end it’s the cameras sensor that determines a lot of the quality and this has a new (untested) sensor that could be great, 7d sensor? ha Good luck.

      • @ will ..not much to understand about the 7d just a very simple built like a tank dslr that takes superb images, just a great work horse for professional or personal use….that also has a great re sale value ! and the price is very justifiable in every regard , just ask any 7d owner.
        boris

          • @ben
spoken like a true 7d owner 🙂 , yes it is a great camera , that gf 1 is also a nice little camera..i had that with a 17mm lens for a little while then i got the dp 2s cause of portability and size !
            boris

  24. People are going to hate me for saying this but, you can buy the X100, Case and Lens Hood and a X-S1 for the price of the body and one lens of the X-Pro 1. I have the body on pre-order but no lens so I think i might have to cancel it and do what is mentioned above. To bad I can’t pass the pre-order to someone on this site. P.S. Thank you to Steve for keeping us updated, Awesome Job!

    • No one will hate you for that….I have an M9 and an X100 just because I wanted a 35mm that was nice and the x100 is 1/2 of the price of a 35mm leica. I may buy one of these although I already own an M9, just because I could have a camera that I could get macros, telephotos, etc.

  25. I think the X Pro 1 is an interesting camera, but all of those comparing it to the NEX, or considering it vs. the NEX are plain out of their minds! They bear almost no similarity other than sensor size.

While the NEX is clearly at the vanguard of the CSC camera class, the X Pro 1 is clearly aimed at Leica! The size of the X Pro 1 is almost identical to the M9 – this is in no way a “compact” camera.

I would expect the images from the X Pro 1 and the NEX-5n to be very similar, albeit with trade-offs. The samples from the X Pro 1 Fuji released today do show signs of moire, though some increase in sharpness as well. There are always trade-offs – you get nothing for free. There are also a lot of features you will not get on the X Pro 1 which the NEX crowd would hate to miss. There is no tilt display, built-in flash, etc. Also, there is no sign of image stabilization in the camera or the lenses.

I have used the X100 and find it to produce wonderful images, but it is not “fast” in any way, and the manual focus by wire is almost unusable. Hopefully these will be improved over the X100. Lastly, while I find the lenses for the Leica to be amazing, I for one, was never impressed with the electronic elements of the Leica bodies, slow, quirky and VERY over-priced. For those who have always liked the rangefinder concept, but could not stomach the problems with Leica cameras, you now may have a reasable alternative.

    • Peter,

Having seen the official specs and read the preview on DP Review, I would agree with you. The Fuji is possibly a good alternative for those people who can’t justify a Leica. IQ still remains to be seen.

The NEX-7 is a totally different kettle of fish.

  26. This can be the star of the flop of 2012 … I will wait and see. In any case, at the suggested price, this one needs to have the best sensor out there or it makes no sense (at least for me).

    • I agree !!
But even if it looks promising, when you look at the first full size samples on the Fuji website it doesn’t look so good to me ! Sensor or lenses ??…

      • The samples on their website are unprocessed images. Put them in Photoshop and do your usual processing and it will be night and day. Just adjusting Levels already changes the images.
What I’m most concern about is that some magenta fringing is there. For example the vertical landscape pix with the rocks shows some fringing in some grass blades in the bottom of the frame. Which begs the question: what happens in low light street scenes or whatever situation stretching the capacities of the sensor.

      • X100 official photo samples were poor (no way matching Leica X1)
X100 in photographers hands was a different story (a match for Leica X1).

X-P1 official photo samples are ok, average really. Ok for Jpegs.
X-P1 in photographers hands … a different story

  27. LOOK GUYS , LEAVE THE FULL FRAME FOR LATTER. I CAN’T AFFORD THE FUJI X-PRO 1 RIGHT NOW ANY WAY. WHY WOULD I BE ABLE TO AFFORD THE FUJI IN A FULL FRAME? YOU KNOW IT’S GOING TO COST AN ARM AND A LEG PLUS BE HEAVER. THE GLASS WOULD SET US BACK , AND WE WOULD HAVE TO SELL OR CARS TO BUY THE LENSES. WE WANT A M9 “LIKE” OR BETTER THAT WE CAN AFFORD. AND I THINK THAT IS JUST WHAT THE PEOPLE AT FUJI ARE TRYING TO GIVE US. GIVE THEM TIME AND IF THE MARKET WANTS IT I AM SURE THEY WILL LISTEN . THEY SEEM TO BE DONG A GOOD JOB NOW BY THE WAY PEOPLE ARE SCRAMBLING ABOUT TO BUY SOMETHING THEY HAVEN’T EVEN SEEN AT ALL. WOW! CAN YOU IMAGE WHAT THEY MUST BE THINKING AT FUJI RIGHT NOW. I THINK WE WILL BE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED. STEVE WILL TELL US ALL ABOUT IT WHEN HE GETS HIS X-PRO1 AND REVIEWS IT. GREAT JOB OF KEEPING YOUR SITE UP. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE EXTRA TRAFFIC THAT SLOWING IT DOWN. THANKS FOR ALL THE WORK YOU DO STEVE . YOU ARE APPRECIATED GREATLY.

    • Really worried about the sharpness of those sample pictures, and how would we focus a manual lens , any peaking features ?

    • even though i might sound like an idiot now.. but what’s ‘fly by wire’?
      please enlighten me!

      • That means there is no mechanical link between the focus ring and the focusing mechanism. Instead, the focusing ring send an electronic signal that is is used to control a motor that moves the focusing mechanism. It is a term that comes from aviation. Many people like me does not like it because there is no direct relation between the movement and the focusing, does not feel natural.

        • Yes, in some modern airplanes there are no cables from the controls to the ailerons, rudder and/or elevator. It measures the control movement like a rheostat then a motor moves the controls according to the amount the pilot moves the controls.

    • I hope it is as Leica Digilux 2 (Panasonic LC1 ) wire aperture & focusing.
Kind of seems that way from the clicks when rotating aperture ring & the blurb about nice resistance when turning focus ring.

    • One other thing
to achieve fast AF on aps-c with CDAF
I think it was necessary to not have helicoid manual focusing mechanism in the lens.

  28. There ‘s a video on youtube if anyone is interested. It looks like an amazing camera. Thanks for the heads up Steve! I hope to get this camera soon. 🙂

    • Crucial question for me too! Fuji will offer one, but maybe Novoflex is first? I don’t know – keep your fingers crossed!

      • I read the brochure which says that the viewfinder frame adjusts to the attached lens. Fine, if you’re using the Fuji XF lenses, but what happens when you attach another lens via an adaptor? If Fuji are going to supply an adaptor of their own, there must be a solution.

    • Don’t hold your breath. Can you think of a camera manufacturer who builds an adapter to allow a different company’s lenses to be mounted?

      Maybe Novoflex.

  29. ahhhh, so many good cameras this year, tempted to get this, but then theres also the oly OM style weather seales m43 body coming.

  30. How my God it still not a full frame!!! What a frustration again!!!!!
How long time do we nees to Wait????

    • With respect, this is a little silly. There is no business reason for any company to introduce a full frame camera unless they have a line of full frame lenses to sell. (As do Leica, Sony, Canon and Nikon.)

Full frame sensors are very expensive, and unnecessarily increase the cost of the product; advances in sensor technology reduce the advantage of larger sensors; and lenses for full frame sensors are necessarily larger and more expensive

Fuji (like any other company) wants to sell its own lenses, not provide a mount for someone else’s.

There’s nothing magical about the size of 2 frames of 1925 vintage movie film. Here’s a bold prediction: with the exception of the four companies above, a few very high end professional companies (like Leaf), and maybe Voigtlander, no one will ever introduce a “full frame” camera again.

        • More importantly – Fuji actually made the Hasselblad XPan – sold as the Fuji TX (it’s still to be found in Japan – I believe)

So Fuji already has a (small) series of FF lenses and experience in producing a Leica M9 style device.

          • The Xpan lenses are excellent, but very special-purpose (panorama) and quite slow for general purpose use.

I think the X-Pro 1 signals that Fuji have decided that their serious digital cameras will be APS-C going forward.

  31. Have they announced official pricing yet? I have heard $1700 body only and $1300 body+35mm.

    • At the CES conference, they said no official price for the moment, but that should be around $1700 for the body alone and $650 for lenses !?? Availability is for late february…

  32. I think this will be the star of 2012. A must have – not a nice to have. Yes I own a Leica M9-P, but the X- Pro 1 is the one that I hoped to see from Leica and now it is Fuji.

      • I agree. If DCReview and DPReview give it the thumbs up, it’s toast. Granted, the two cameras are really in completely different classes (NEX-7 is leading the way for compact ILC’s, while the X-Pro 1 is geared more towards being a poor man’s Leica). I have both pre-ordered, but may the best camera win, especially seeing as they would both be coming at the same time.

          • I think the Leica X1 already took a major hit by the Fuji X100. But true, the last remaining potential X1 customers will probably prefer this camera now.

        • Why do you say that if DPReview give it the thumbs up it will fail? Surely that’s a good thing.

NEX has lens problems, not to mention that it goes from the smallest to laughably the largest when attaching the only good lens.

    • I waited for this announcement before deciding on the NEX7. As it stand, I ordered the NEX7. Why? Image quality is likely to be the same BUT the NEX7 offers 1080/50 or 60P video with silent auto-focus during video and, most important, image stabilisation. Have you shot video with an X100. It looks like it came from a 5 year old camcorder. The NEX7 can shoot video that is on par with $1500 camcorder.

      • You sir are looking for a video camera I believe. This stills camera may fail to impress you then.

I would obviously recommend the GH2 or, a video camera.

      • This camera is completely aimed at enthusiast still photographers. If it has video at all, it’s an afterthought, and that’s fine with me if it means that the camera is not littered with video specific junk. I’d rather they left it off altogether.

Hate to be blunt, but folks who want video should look at video cameras. If those video cameras don’t have the features they want, or are too expensive, they should pressure the video manufacturers.

I don’t go to video sites and complain that their camcorders don’t make nice stills.
