Well it had to happen sooner or later! The NEX-7 is being cleared out at B&H Photo at a great price so for those of you who are not interested in going full frame with the new A7 and A7r, here is your chance to snag a great deal on a fantastic camera.

For $999 (A $650 Savings) you get the NEX-7 body, the 18-55 Kit Zoom in black, the 20 2.8 Pancake lens a 16GB Mem Card, a case and a $100 gift card for a future purchase at B&H Photo!

  1. The Nex6 is a pretty good camera too… I suppose it depends on one’s shooting preference. I don’t own a 6, but it is suppose to focus more nimbly and the 16Mp sensor somewhat less noisy than the older 7 platform. That would suggest it works better for street shooting under lower light levels than the 7. However for landscapes, architectural subjects, the 7 would be the better choice IMHO.

Btw the best reason to get this end of life Nex7 package deal was the just announced Hasselblad Lunar Chinese New Year limited edition selling for $10,000! Get this discounted Nex7, then send it off to be gold plated, and stick on some exotic wood grip… Voila! Your very own one of a kind limited edition with left over change for all Nex mount lenses ever made including the Zeiss Touits, no?

  2. The Sony Nex7 is one of the landmark camera of its time. Make no mistake about it.

I started my path with digital cameras on the Kodak SLRn, it was perhaps a much more frustrating camera to use than the Nex7! Simply because at the time Nikon didn’t have a FF DSLR in production yet, and all my lenses were Nikon and Nikkors. The iconoclastic Kodak was finally replaced by a D7000. When I past my fiftieth birthday, I adopted the Nex7 for the sake of my aging shoulders worn by years of lugging around Hasselblads, and even Sinar P.

I no longer shoot professionally, and the diminutive Nex7 was the first APSc compact camera to approach medium format quality that I’ve lived with my entire life. Until the RX1, nothing this compact had ever packed this level of resolution and IQ. Before anybody turn on the flames, I admit there are now many worthy adversaries to the Nex7 and even surpassing it.

That early life I walked did not enjoy AF very much, indeed focusing a Sinar P with my 180mm Symmar lens can take up to 15 to 20 minutes per shot at f16… Light readings taken by an old trusty Minolta Autometer, etc. So enough of bellyaching about slow AF at low light, difficult menus, or the hardship of having to charge with USB cables… From my humble perspective any camera made today is far easier to use than all those old cameras that recorded our history, after all if one can’t focus a lens manually, one hasn’t actually taken a photo.

  3. Seb´s shot from the hip needs a bit of clarification – valid at least for NEX-5N, NEX-5R and NEX-7 (these are still part of my collection, even if there are Alpha 7 and RX-1 as well):

    > You can’t set auto iso or shutter speed limits.

You can set Auto ISO limits on NEX-5N, NEX-5R and NEX-7. Been there, done that.

    > You can only charge batteries through the camera.

Not true. NEX-5N and NEX-7 come with external battery charger. (The NEX-5R does not come with an external charger, however aftermarket ones are available for less than 10 Euro/USD – and one can, if need be, order one from Sony as well).

    > No constant f2.8 zooms.

Look to the Sony Alpha range – more than enough to choose from. Or use legacy glass… cheap high quality AF primes are available from Sigma, with native E-mount. Manual lenses from Samyang and Cosina (Voigtlaender brand, …) a worth a look as well. Canon EF can be adapted w

    > Yes you can adapt legacy lenses but good luck actually finding ones with optical quality
    > as good as today’s.

That statement should be critically revisited by the author. There is plenty of old glass which is up to the demands of the NEX-7 sensor – Leica M and Leica R lenses, Zeiss lenses for Contax and Rollei, Nikon, etc… – give it a try.

    > Lack of fast, compact primes.

1,8/24 Zeiss, 1,8/35 and 1,8/50 Sony, 1,8/32 Zeiss Touit, or for real wide angle the 2,8/12 Zeiss Touit… if manual focus is no problem, Zeiss ZM, Leica M primes…

    > The menu system really is terrible.

That is a matter of taste.

    > Laggy interface, including scrolling between images.

Use fast SDHC cards, and there is no problem. Remember that namely RAW files are not small – 16ish MBytes per shot on the NEX-5N/R, 25ish MBytes on the NEX-7.

    > Apps section is particularly terrible.

What for are apps needed on a camera which does not support apps (NEX-7).

    > Slow AF, especially in low light.

Compare with other APS-C cameras with contrast autofocus, and take a decent lens (not the kit zoom) – and you may find it actually faster than the AF of the competitors…

    > The EVF is extremely noisy in low light, making manual focus very difficult

Huh? I should know about that, after more than 20000 shots with the NEX-7 with Leica M lenses. Check the settings (setting effect off in low light may be interesting to try…).

    > The grip isn’t big enough if you decide to start using 400g+ lenses on it.

That would depend on the size of your hands – I regularly shoot the Elmarit R 2,8/135 and the Apo-Telyt R 3,4/180 on the NEX-7, and have used the Telyt 4,8/280 without much ado – for the latter, one usess a monopod anyway, to reduce the shake.

    > And from my subjective experience, ISO 1600 and above aren’t very good.

NEX-5N and NEX-5R in RAW allow reasonable results (printable in A3) with 6400 ASA without major postprocessing, the NEX-7 is useable without ado up to 3200 ASA, and with some effort well above that… not that you need to do so, using fast glass… a Zeiss Sonnar C 1,5/50 is a quite affordable option, Leica and Cosina have others to offer – or, if big is no problem, take a cheap used 1970ies Nikon 1,4/35 on a Novoflex-adapter – and you are nicely set for low light photography. If it has to be small, take an old Summilux M 1,4/35 with adapter – it is not perfect, but works quite well, both for colour and for b/w…

    Summary:

I recommend the NEX-7 to anybody who likes to have a top quality high resolution sensor in a small and robust package… as long as this anybody can live with some colour cast problems in a limited number of super wide angle non-retrofocus lenses…

  4. Listed right on the B&H page for this deal
    Included in the box:

    NP-FW50 Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery (1080mAh)
Alpha AC Charger for W Series Battery

  5. I would not get any of the NEX cameras for the following reasons:

You can’t set auto iso or shutter speed limits.
You can only charge batteries through the camera.
    No constant f2.8 zooms.
Yes you can adapt legacy lenses but good luck actually finding ones with optical quality as good as today’s.
    Lack of fast, compact primes.
The menu system really is terrible.
Laggy interface, including scrolling between images. Apps section is particularly terrible.
Slow AF, especially in low light.
The EVF is extremely noisy in low light, making manual focus very difficult
The grip isn’t big enough if you decide to start using 400g+ lenses on it.

And from my subjective experience, ISO 1600 and above aren’t very good.

    • Just to clear up a couple of statements here for those who are not informed..

You can charge batteries with an external charger, I have three chargers for my NEX and A7 batteries. One was $6, one was $20 and one was $25. All work perfect. So you can indeed charge the batteries with an external charger. As for legacy lenses..you can use almost any lens made today on a NEX via adapter. There are many using Leica lenses only on their NEX and Alpha 7 cameras and enjoying it. I prefer the A7 to the NEX-7 but this is still a fantastic camera and at this cost, a good deal without question for someone looking for an APS-C with EVF.

  6. Do you think there will come a successor for the sony rx1r this year? I am thinking of buying one but maybe it is beter to wait.
    Jan

  7. Oh wow this kit is cheaper than the body only, and that 20mm is a nice lens to have.

Does this confirm an Alpha update of the NEX-7 btw? They announced a Sony Alpha 5000, which is basically a NEX-3, at CES 2 days ago

    • Agree, a great deal with the 20mm! It’s making this camera really pocketable and pictures are just great. I upgraded to and A7r recently from the NEX-7 but I still love to use the NEX and I will definitely keep it as a second body. Also great to use it with the full frame Sony Zeiss 35 2.8 by the way!

The NEX-7 successor is expected to arrive soon according to sonyalpharumors. CES announcement was entry level stuff only.
