Quick 1st Look video on the Sony – Zeiss 16-35 F/4 FE OSS Lens!

Quick 1st Look video on the Sony – Zeiss 16-35 F/4 FE OSS Lens!

A few days ago Fed Ex delivered a brand new Sony 16-35 FE OSS F/4 lens and it is a beauty! While large, it is smaller than a Nikon 14-24 and just as good in the IQ department. This new lens is Sony’s wide angle answer for all A7, A7r and A7s owners as it is a full frame FE mount lens of astounding quality. The color, the sharpness and the pop are here. No need for an f/2.8 lens as f/4 is fantastic and hits the sweet spot right from the get go.

I will be doing a full review of this lens with loads of samples within 1-2 weeks. For now, enjoy the 1st look video I posted on YouTube a couple of days ago as well as a couple of snapshots I took in my house this morning of my dogs sporting their new X-Mas PJ’s. πŸ™‚

ORDER THE 16-35 AT AMAZON or B&H PHOTO

I have some shots from outside that tell me this lens will be THE lens for wide angle Sony full frame E mount shooters…

BELOW: The 1st look video. This is NOT my review, this is my 1st look πŸ™‚ Enjoy.Β

Three snapshots taken today! Direct from camera color – Sony A7s and the lens at f/4

  1. Just picked a copy of this lens. There is a piece of paper in the box that states that for users of 7 and 7R, version 1.2 of the firmware should be installed. Only problem is that this firmware isn’t available yet. Anyone got ideas of when it will be available and what improvements the firmware will bring?

  2. Would be nice if you would have put the lens on the camera, it would give a better idea of its size. It looks large next to the other lens but the camera is what everybody that owns one knows. I ordered the lens.

  3. The biggest take-away message from Sony’s lenses and cameras: mirrorless will push DSLRs into a niche, just as DSLRs pushed 35mm into a niche.

I’m not saying that 35mm or DSLRs are bad. But the FE bodies sure are showing us what a true digital camera should be like. The more dedicated lenses that Sony releases, the more photographers will choose the FE system over a DSLR system.

I find it curious that anyone with an up-to-date digital camera would complain that a lens is an f/4 instead of an f/2.8. But I also think that most people will ‘get it’, eventually. πŸ™‚

  4. I personally prefer dog pictures over cats. You manage to capture the warmness of the dog just wanting to be a trusted companion versus the coldness of cats’ ‘feed me, love me’… attitude. πŸ™‚

    • Christmas shirts ? These dogs always gives me a great laugh, particularily the Brussel Griffon looks very funny πŸ™‚ Great photos too, I wonder how much better a performer it is compared to the excellent Nikkor 16-35 mm. Perhaps the review will give some clues…

  5. Just curious Steve, do some Zeiss lenses have more or less of a “3D pop” than other ones?

I’ve read that the ZM lenses do this particulary well but I wonder if FE mount ones or ones for Nikon/Canon all give the same effect.
