QUICK SHOT: Portrait of my Dad
by Nehemiah Richardson
(From Steve: This “Quick Shot” will be a new series much like the daily inspiration but with ONE SHOT only. If you have ONE SHOT that you absolutely love, send it to me with a description of the shot, what you used to take the image and why you like it. I may post it as a “Quick Shot”! Send to me at stevehuff1@me.com)
This is a photo of my dad I captured a few days ago, I snapped it to honor him as he is the only parent I’ve ever truly know. My mother walked out of my life when I was 6-months old leaving my dad to raise me on his own. Through thick and thin, homelessness, living in motels and at times only having beans and rice to eat my Dad always made sure I was able to enjoy my Birthdays and Christmas, enjoy life as child in general. I’ve always wanted to give him the world but that is out of my power, so I want to honor him with this Portrait instead.
Thank you for your consideration.

That’s your everyday hero in my book. Awesome, thanks for sharing. As a dad, he is a figure to look up to.
A touching portrait with real meaning and a story. Great work to you, and importantly, to your dad for the job that he did in supporting you.
I have not wrote a comment here in years, but being a dad, I only feel the most respect for your dad to raise you on his own from this young age. And looking at your picture, he has done a great job – stunning portrait!
Stunning and beautiful, well done. You should show your dad all the above comments. thanks for sharing.
your love and respect for him shine through
Really lovely. Lovely to read and see this.

Nehemiah this is one of the best portraits I ever saw. Congratulations !!! …
This picture depicts a hard life. Happy of you to have such a father!!!
A very moving account. The picture captures much quiet dignity of this man. Salute!
and honor him you have – well done.
A beautiful warm post and an inspiring start to my day.
Thanks
A fine portrait of a true man. God bless him.
Wonderful and touching story, beautiful, evocative portrait. Excellent job.
It’s a wonderful portrait and a beautiful tribute to your father.
Sad story, good portrait, makes me think
Quite a handsome fella
Ed, I think it’s because when we look at their old age, we fear for ourselves.
All the past, all those memories and feelings caught in one image, one expression. There’s really nothing more to say.
This is a very intense portrait.
We often fail to photograph our elderly parents. Perhaps it is because we prefer to remember them as they were, not as they are, or we fear their disapproval of the results. Too soon it is too late for regrets.
Nice job.
This was a beautiful post in words and imagery. And I agree with others, the pictures of family are the ones you end up treasuring the most. Thank you very much for sharing
Great story, short and powerful, nice pic but…your dad stole the show! congratulations to you and your wonderful father, thank you.

The best post ever…
Nehemiah, you have just missed the Taylor Wessing Portrait prize entry date for 2015, but if you are over 18 and shot this after 1st Jan 2015, try and enter it next year, with your story alongside it. http://www.npg.org.uk/photoprize-application-form.php Its an international competition held by the National Portrait Gallery in London. If you get stuck for the entry fee, let us know, I will happily sponsor your entry. There is a life written across your father’s face which you have both captured amazingly well. Very best wishes to you both. David
Great !
Your Dad is the Real Deal–Nehemiah–a Real Man. Great story, great shot.
Photographs of family members are often the most treasured and this is a nice one indeed.
Nice portrait. Amazing Dad! If only all of us could attain half of what he has as dad’s.
