Phantom-3

With the soaring popularity of photo/video drones I will soon be incorporating them into the site in the form of new reviews. Some of these Drones are absolutely amazing in their ability to be easily flown and capture GORGEOUS video and photos from above. I took delivery of a DJI Phantom 3 Professional and am THRILLED with everything about it from control, quality, ease of use, solid construction and the camera included is phenomenal. In any case, look for the 1st Drone review soon (DJI Phantom 3 Pro). My 1st real test flight below with Brandon, by my home.

    • No, nothing small. The Phantom 3, Inspire 1 or Inspire 1 Pro are AMAZING with the cameras that come with them. The Inspire 1 Pro has a Micro 4/3 camera mount.

      • Hi, Steve! Thank you for the answer. Do you have any idea if Inspire 1 could fly with a RX1r II and gimbal?

  1. Hey Steve,

I’ve been shooting commercially with a couple drones since this last summer. They are fantastic tools – it is amazing what you can do with a 400 foot tall tripod.

Besides the important safety rules about altitudes and airports another caveat I think readers here should know about is that one needs a Section 333 exemption from the FAA to use drones for *any* commercial work. If you are going to sell or profit from an image made using a drone then this is required.

    Always enjoy your work!!

  2. Very cool Steve! I have lots of photos to share 😀 DJI is making some amazing progress and just like cameras in the Pro-Consumer grade category, the drone equivalents of this are flat out amazing and so much fun! Especially for a photographer, it literally is the most fun I have had in years! Looking forward to your insights. Good luck and safe flying!

  3. That’s good Steve, I’ve gone through 3 drones..not crashed,,upgraded. Now on the Inspire, a beautiful machine. Lots of blog competition out there on drones, sure you’ll succeed.

    • Thanks. I am not trying to compete as I could never do that for drones. Just adding some here and there, ones I really enjoy and get to try out. The Inspire is amazing!

  4. i’m waiting for my dji S900 with zenmuse gimbal for panasonic GH4. i used a phantom 3 anf it’s an incredible product, but it’s a closed frame: you cannot change almost anything.

  5. So true Steve, a drone can make captivating videos and photos and the new ones are so easy to operate! Last summer my friend Graham Paul brought an entry-level Phantom, and, with no previous experience, stuffed it in his backpack and used it (along with a handycam) to make an awesome video of the Milford Track in Fiordland, New Zealand. Check it out!

  6. I have the phantom 3 professional and have went through many (less expensive) drones to get there. There is never a dull moment while operating this little wonder, I think it is more fun then a aldult male should have.

  7. Sweet… great idea! Please make sure you familiarize yourself with the regulations since there is so much negative press already out there with people flying drones and not knowing that they are aircrafts and are regulated by the FAA, regardless of the class of airspace they are operated in. Especially since a review would be considered commercial use if there is income associated with it.

    • As with the hundreds of others who review these, I am just as aware as anyone about regulations. I decided to review them as they can be quite amazing for photographers and videographers and while many are already using these incredible machines, so so many more have no clue as to the features, ease of use, and quality that can be had here. But yes, the #1 rule IMO is to be responsible with them as they are in no way toys (at least the ones I will be talking about). Thank you.
