Attending a Leica M Workshop

by Patrice Ouellet

(This article was “lost” and found on a laptop of mine from 2 years ago, so since it was never posted I am sharing it now. I found MANy old articles that were lost and will post some of them over the next month or so along with the new posts. These lost posts were accidentally “lost” so feel I should post them as many have some great images, info and stories. Enjoy! – Steve)

Hi Steve,

My name is Patrice Ouellet. I am a long time fan of your site. I live in Canada, province of Quebec. I would like to share with you a few pictures taken during a Leica M Vision workshop held in Kamouraska (Province of Quebec, Canada). It was great shooting with the M9-P and one lens only. I picked the Summicron. After a few hours you start seeing the world through the vision of one lens only and then you get more inspired. We had the chance to have Tom Smith with us from Leica Akademie. All the gorgeous lenses were there, including the fabulous Noctilux. Unfortunately, we did not get to see and try the new M9-M. The more I think about it the more I think this camera is for me.

The minimalist approach (one camera, one lens, black and white only), I feel that’s when the best shots come out as you totally forget about the camera and focus on creating a vision.

Thanks Steve and long life to your site.

  1. Nice photos but I really don’t understand why it’s so common to see photos like this made with “computer cameras” and really great glass and then be processed beyond recognition to mimic film. All of these photos could have been made with an iPhone 4 and some filters. Get an old m3 and some tri-x. jm2c

  2. Absolutely magnificent photography Patrice. It reminds me of the work of the FSA photographers in Depression-Era USA (the greats, like Walker Evans, Roy Stryker et al) with a contemporary take. I mean that the vision is just as great and encompassing, and pure documentary in style but with an oblique nod to fine art, too. Well done!

  3. Very classic look photos!! Don’t need latest model of Leica to get good pictures. Yours are quite good in my view, close your ears and keep shooting.

  4. Hey Steve,

Thanks for posting. Bring back memories of that workshop. I am still a huge fan of your site/work. I still believe very much in the minimalist approach. It is so easy these days to get distracted that the one lens/one body/b&w only approach is still like meditation to me. Photography has brought much more than pictures to me. It has helped me succeed in business by staying connected to what truly matters. Long life to your site. All the best from Quebec (Canada).

  5. Please for the Love off all us leica fans more ok and don’t skimp on the details very special one day for me I hope is this expensive any grants for independent artists under continuing education-and as all ways your site rocks and Rolls.
