The Nikon 1 Sample Image Gallery

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

All images below taken with a Nikon V1, V2 or J1 camera!

Despite the negativity on this camera system by those who never owned or shot one, I find the Nikon 1 system to be special, especially the original V1 camera when used with certain lenses. It has nice qualities that are much different than those from full frame or large sensor cameras. The color, the speed, the sharpness, all top notch and very very film like in its rendering and output.

I have used and owned the best 35mm cameras in the world from the Leica M9, the Leica Monochrom, The Leica M 240, Sony Rx1R, and others such as the Fuji X100 and Olympus OM-D E-M5 with the best glass. Even with owning those and becoming spoiled by the full rich creamy output I am here almost two years after the original V1 camera launched STILL shooting with one and still loving it. This camera system was the underdog in the digital world but the fact is that for me, this beats any mirrorless made by Canon 🙂

Of course there is no way the files from the V1 can beat the Leica’s or the Sony full frame’s or even the APS-C cameras when you think technically, but these files do have their own MoJo. Their own brand of color. Their own flavor of beautiful. Not sure if it is the grit, the noise, the color, or the fact that the camera is such a joy to shoot but whatever it is, there is a little magic in this system.

Think about it, the V1 has almost everything we want in a mirrorless. Great design, great build, long battery life, built in EVF, super fast and accurate AF, dead silent shutter, and now, a few fantastic pro lenses. The best part? You can still pick up a new V1 for a song, about $260 with lens new in box. $460 with two lenses, new in box. Probably the greatest buy in digital history (while they last). I prefer the V1 to the V2 for many reasons but am excited to see the new V3 coming this year, 2013.

My dream would be for Nikon to go back to the square styling, put in a higher res EVF, bring back the big battery and improve the noise and dynamic range of the sensor without losing the color signature. If they do that it will be huge for them. The 1 system took all of this time for people to see that it is not a toy, not nonsense and not a P&S camera (The V1 or V2). These cameras are highly capable and bring a great experience with them. The more you use it, the more you love it. I’ve bonded with the V1 just as I have the Leica M and Sony RX1.

  1. Beautiful work! I found your site by googling for info on Nikon 1 and c-mounts. I’m awaiting delivery of an N1 AW1 which I want to use as an all around camera, but specifically because of the built in gps I’m looking to remove the ir block and put in an ngb filter for enhanced ndvi crop analysis. My thought is to have a c-mount ngb filter between the sensor and the c-mount adapter and a c-mount lens. Not sure how the threading is going to work but figured I’d figure that out once I had everything on hand. Wondering if you had any insights? Thanks again for your time.

  2. The v1 is a great camera – very forgiving in the hands of a rank amateur like myself. I have yet to take a better pictue with my Fiji xt–1.er

  3. Steve, I just purchased a V2. Thanks for posting your beautiful photos. Are any or all of these taken with the kit lenses? Are the lenses used listed anywhere with the photos?

  4. Hi Steve! The photos taken are amazing! Warm greeting frm Malaysia! May I ask is it okay for a non-professional to have a nikon v1 now(Cus it’s had lauched for quite sometime) My budget is around the price!

  5. I have a question… The picture taken of the door that has “Harlan County Lung Association” written on it… Was that taken in Kentucky? I love the show “Justified” which, of course is shot in Harlan County, Kentucky. (Side note: I am expecting my Nikon J1 any day now…)

  6. I bought the nikon V1 kit lens plus 18,5mm thanx to your review and I’m happy with it.
Great shot, for me the best is the orango!!
    Bye from Italia.

  7. Seriously falling in love with your photos. Got to know you from my friend who shared your post on the NIKON DF.

  8. Thanks for this Steve. I just got me a V1 2-lens kit. A fantastic bargain. It succeeds my Lumix LX5. I have no doubt I’ll be loving this camera, knowing it has the potential to capture the kind of images you’ve got on this page. 🙂

  9. say Steve,
i always read about OOC color and stuff like this on your website. do you capture jpgs for simple snaps or do you go through a workflow, say with adobe RGB raw files to capture more details?

  10. Hi Steve,

great image gallery was always – enjoy reading your reviews for ages.
but for the V1 grip, for sure your fotodiox grip seems to be nice and well made –
i’ve found myself a way good looking, slick grip, named the Nikon 1 V1
custom grip from richard franiec, just in case you don’t know this baby here:

    https://picasaweb.google.com/RichardFraniec/Nikon1V1CustomGrip?authkey=Gv1sRgCO-Ru9vmiO2yeg

I got it already for my 1st V1 body, now i’ve ordered a 2nd one some days ago for my 2nd V1 body. 😉
Gotta knew Richard’s Camera grips for quite some time, and my Sigma DP2s also have the custom
grip designed by Richard Franiec, the build quality is way nice, and suits perfectly for the matching
camera. It’sa must have for my V1.

    cheers
    Marc

    • I will soon. Just got it a couple of days ago, so in about 2 weeks I will have a review. Seems like a nice lens, very contrasty and puts out rich color, more so than the other lenses. Very well made, moreso than the other zooms.

      • soooo? how is that review comming?

listen man, i have to be honest. i simply CAN’T afford to come here more often in search for this review. everytime i do, i end up browsing new stuff online or spend hours capturing, because your reviews are very nice and encouraging…
by the way, most of the time i am just dissapointed when i see other reviewers photos and i can’t put my finger on the special glow, your photos have. so thank you for that.

well, maybe it’s a good thing you didn’t post that review yet. still juggling the 32mm in and out of my amazon cart…

          • All reviews are easily found on the site by looking at the review index. ALL Nikon 1 reviews are in the “Mirrorless Central” tab above at the top of any page. You can also use the search tab here on this site. 🙂 Glad you found it.

  11. Thanks Steve….love the rendering…..Could you tell me where exactly was the first image taken….it looks like a spot I would like to visit when I am
in the South West this coming winter……thanks again Steve for such a great site ….

      • Steve is this the famous Bell rock that everyone speaks about?….i’ll be driving in from Flagstaff via British Columbia
