Bag Giveaway Daily Inspiration #4

by Juliet Paine

Dear Steve,

Thank you for the wonderful website. As someone new to photography back in 2012, I came across it and quickly became addicted to both the real word reviews of camera gear and the great photos. Its been responsible for much of my G.A.S (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) since as I shifted from my beginners Canon EOS (rebel) DSLR to Olympus and Panasonic micro 4/3s before a final shift to Fujifilm.

I’m a 37 year old mother, teacher, writer and hobbyist photographer who lives in Adelaide, Australia but has travelled extensively. The challenge when I travel is to decide what cameras to leave behind as I often pack too much. I’m hoping that if I’m lucky and win the ONA BOWERY in your competition, I might finally reduce the amount of cameras and lenses that I carry with me when travelling.

Anyway, here are three of my favourite images:

Seagull in Vancouver, Canada with CANON EOS 1000D & Kit lens (July 2012)

  1. Thanks for the feedback. The Boston at night shot was done using a Panasonic G3 with the 20mm F1.7 on front. It was handheld and I remember just standing around in the cold (I come from Australia so I’m not used to that kind of weather!) for ages and taking shot after shot as I attempted to get it right. I either shot it on aperture priority or program mode. Unfortunately I’d need need to dig through the metadata in Lightroom to find much more about the settings for each shot. Although I always shot micro 4/3a gear in raw whereas Fuji I now do mostly in jpeg.

  2. Hi Juliet,

I absolutely love the second picture in color of the street. Better than anything I have been able to do. I have a strong theoretical knowledge but lack practice, something I try to remedy from now one by starting to take some more time to enjoy life and work a bit less.
I’m trying to move from “live to work” to “work to live” since a few months.

I seem to have the same GAS problem as you and have the same preferences in camera brands as I own an E-M1, PEN-F and just ordered an X-T2. This is in addition to my Oly setup, not selling my M43 gear which was initially the plan when testing the Fuji gear. You don’t want to know about the Oly and PanaLeica glass collection I have. I ordered only one Fuji lens with the camera though, the 16-55/2.8. But this weekend I rented/tested the 56/1.2 and 18-135 and an X-Pro2. I estimate one wideangle zoom and three primes will foloow in the coming year for the Fuji. Then it’s GAS rehab. 😉

May I ask what cameras you have/had from Olympus and Fuji and what camera/lens combo you took these three pictures with?

And if not too much work what the settings for picture 2 were?

I keep my fingers crossed and hope you win the Ona Bowery.
