Daily Inspiration #168 by Allan Roney

Hi Steve, have been enjoying your site for about three months now, and I thought I’d take the time to send in some submissions shots for the aforementioned section of your site.

My name is Allan Roney (from Glasgow, Scotland), I take photographs for pleasure, not business. I’ve been shooting for about 3/4 years, after failing at music.

These shots were taken in NYC with a Panasonic GF1; the problem with shooting in NYC is that there’s not many shots that haven’t been taken, so I spent time looking at things from a slightly alternative angle.

The entire set (including some m9 shots taken with a borrowed Leica) can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/allanroney/sets/72157623857537537/

Kind regards,

Al.

Allan, I keep coming back to your Flickr stream. This is truly stunning photography! Enjoy your new M9!

  2. Just checked out your flickr stream. Great shots! You really have an eye for telling stories through your shots, so much drama and presence in many of them. Very inspirering!

  3. Thank you very much for sharing.

Your Flickr images are just beautiful. Awesome. Perfect.

    Thank you for inspiration.

  4. Some very kind comments in here, they’re very much appreciated. To they and answer a couple of questions, the lenses on the gf1 were the 20 1.7, the 14-45 & the 45-200. All processed with a custom preset in silver efex pro.

Picked up the m9 last night, exciting times!

Many thanks again everyone, you’re very kind.

  5. Breathtaking images Allan; it’s been a while since I’ve been excited about images presented here, but these are really inspiring. Please don’t tell us they’re the only good ones in a row of thousands… 🙂

  6. Amazing. Your NYC flickr set is just fantastic. I think it must be one of the best I’ve seen. It really make me want to go back and visit NYC. It would be great if I could borrow your eyes then 😉
    Good luck with your M9!

  7. To be fair though, the GF1 is a stunning camera and with an eye like his not much more is needed. Will be interested to compare the M9 shots in the future to these. Can’t see them being beaten easily.

  8. Looked through your Flickr set…unreal. Your shots are well composed and all very technically sound. Great formal shots of the city I love. Wifey and I were there for 10 years and my great dream is to move back.

Were all of these with your GF1? How did you postprocess them? Silver EFX? In camera monochrome?

Thanks for sharing. It made my morning.

  9. Hi Allan,
this is a fantastic B&W photo stream on flickr; I like it !!!!

    Greetings from Germany, Matthias

  10. Thanks for all the good will, it’s always nice to hear people say pleasant things about your photography!

Re. the conversions, I always use Silver FX pro; a wonderful bit of software.

All the good will might just get me of my behind & process the pile of films from NYC that are lying in a dark room somewhere…

  11. I’m blown away by your flickr nyc set!! Thanks for sharing! Care to share your secret of B&W conversion? 😛

  12. Is it really possible to take pictures of New York from a new perspective? Of course, Nice job. New Yorkers take it for granted, but nothing like new scenary to spark the creativity in all of us.

  13. I’m going to add my voice to the chorus – wonderful work, Allan. Loved the photostream. Congratulations on some great images. Please keep shooting!!

  14. Your images are some of the best I’ve seen on this website and flickr. You have an amazing eye, and your use of light/shadows is exceptional! And you can still take wonderful images without the m9!

  15. PS; the rather fabulous quote on my flickr set is from ‘The Unbearable Lightness of Being’ by Milan Kundera, and is about as fitting as any description of NYC could hope to be;

“…beauty in the European sense has always had a premeditated quality to it. The beauty of New York rests on a completely different base. It’s unintentional. It arose independent of human design, like a stalamitic cavern. Forms which are in themselves quite ugly turn up fortuitously, without design, in such incredible surroundings that they sparkle with a sudden, wondrous poetry”

  16. Many thanks, everyone; funnily enough, I sold the GF1 along with all my Nikon gear last week, all for my indulgence (an M9). Which I collect tomorrow. I hold this site partially responsible…

Back to NYC in April, with the M9 in tow – will appear on the flickr about then.

  17. Allan,

Thank god you failed at music…photography is definitely your thing. I went trough Flickr and I have not seen all this images of NY anywhere else, some are very new. I think this are quality images can be put on a book easily. Congratulations.

  18. Beautiful work! Fantastic tonality and mood on those shots. And I loved your write up/intro on the first page too. An artist at work! Well done.

  19. All fantastic shots, some of the best I’ve seen with the GF1. My favorite is the third, the person being out of focus gives the shot a very moody feel.
