Daily Inspiration #221 by Hien L

Hi Steve,
I really enjoy your checking out your blog and daily inspirations. I just picked up my first Leica which I adore! However until now I have been shooting mainly with a Hasselblad 500c with various types films. I love film (especially the medium format feel), street photography and cinematic moments, so it only made sense to me that all those things should go hand in hand. That’s what inspired me to shoot film, nothing renders the classic look and feel of a frame like old school film! However I have started to take baby steps back to the digital world thanks to the M9 🙂
My websites are:
So here are my 3 captures.

  2. It looks like one of your camera backs has a leak. It works for the shot you chose but you might not want it all the time. I’ve owned four Hassy’s in my career and it’s fairly common. Last time I checked it was around $50 to have new seals put in.

  3. Wow. Those pics really draw you in, don’t they? Just one question, did you do much post processing with them, especially the beach one? Like others, added you on flickr because your photostream is pretty cool and makes me want to get a 500c! Thanks for sharing

  4. Your images with the hassy are magnificent! Thanks for sharing! Does the 90mm on a hassy act like a 45mm on a 35mm camera? Or am I confusing that with another format?

    • Hi Dave,

Thanks! haha I’m not actually sure of your question, but on the hassy I have a Carl Zeiss 80mm f2.8 lens, I shoot medium format so the film is 120mm which is very different from 35mm format 🙂

  5. Juat added you to my Flickr account as well. Fantastic photos you have over there too. Truly an inspiration. Thank you for sharing.

  6. Yes, a pure delight to page your links !
What scanner are you using for the medium format?
Thanks a lot to both of you Steve and Hien !

  7. Hien,

Your pictures are truly amazing…an inspiration…can i ask you how you created the black borders? I love that they are a bit uneven…thanks a bunch!!

    • Hi John,

Thanks! actually, the film is scanned on disk and then you can use any basic app to crop the edges, eg: picaso, photoshop, etc..

  8. Thanks Steve for the feature, much appreciated!
Thanks for all for the kind words 🙂

  9. Hien L! This was truly an inspiration. I liked your Hassy shots (here + Flickr + blog) to the extent that I packed my Hassy and spent 3+ hours walking and shooting in my neighborhood until the sun went down. The experience was very different from photowalking with an M! Thanks, anyway. Great pics you have there.

    • Hi Mikael,
Thanks! anytime there’s a hassy involved, inspiration just flows! great to see the hassy got you inspired too! The feeling sure is different from shooting with the leica, it’s hard to describe but with film you just feel a little something more with each frame you take 🙂

  10. Mikael, a new scanner dedicated to 120 film will be coming out supposedly in June of this year. I believe it’s brand is Reflecta.

  11. Very impressive work Hien L… You are a true photographer… Thanks for sharing, i am truly inspired by your work… Bravo!

  12. I got myself a 500c/m and 80mm Planar last year. Amazing camera for an amazing price! Its the Leica of medium format and full of mechanical goodness. But buying a good MF film scanner is more difficult. Flatbed Epsons deliver a fraction of the resolutiong they promise and new MF film scanners just don’t exist. Any ideas?

  13. I need to get me a Hassy. I don’t even know where to begin as far as what parts or specific model. I’m sure I would get ripped off and not even know it.

    • Me again. I just went through your Flickr feed and it is absolutely amazing. Looking forward to seeing your photos in my feed each day now that I have added you as a contact.

      • Don’t worry about the model, it just has to say 500 on it, after that it just depends on your budget. Just today i sold my 500 c/m with the zeiss 80 2.8 for about $650 perfectly functional. There are some bargains to be found. And it is a wonderfull system with excelent reliability. But despite all those great advenatges i sold it bescause, for what i like to do my rollei gx 2.8 makes for a better flow on the field, just somehing to keep in mind when considering medium format. Also, yes more money, but newer and and excellent performer is the fuji gf670. Check steve’s review and you’ll buy one right away.just like i did. All your fault Steve. Hahaha!
