Daily Inspiration #209 by Marq Sutherland

Hi Steve,

Sending this in for your Daily Inspiration. This past weekend I got to check out a Seal Show as well. I’d have to say his voice was a little off, but he was still charming the ladies:)

Photographed at Cabarceno Nature Park here near Bilbao were I live now. Shot with the M9 and 50mm Summicron (latest version). Processed in Lightroom and SilverEfexPRO

All the best from Spain,

Marq Sutherland

  1. Hi Marq! Maybe slightly off-topic, but I plan spending a week in Bilbao this summer. Could you recommend some places to go for photography? Of special interest are of course tips about places that I won’t find in the guidebooks. (I will probably shooting both analog b/w film and digital – with the intent to convert to b/w.)

    • (..Shoot the Guggenheim Gallery! ..Textures, colours, shapes, contrasts – and that’s just the exterior!..)

      • Sure. That’s actually the main reason for going there. Last summer I shot the Selfridges in Birmingham, UK. That proved to be much harder than I thought it would be. I expect the Guggenheim to be the same – easier said than done. However, I think I will have time for other photographic excursions as well…

    • Hi Erik,

Just saw your question. Bilbao is quite wonderful to photograph. Fiesta would be a great time to visit if you want to photograph people. I believe it starts August 20th and lasts for a week. But all summer I am sure you will find something of interest. Someone mentioned the Guggenheim and yes it is quite beautiful to photograph. What I have noticed about the building is how different it looks as the light changes, so you may find it interesting to walk around at different times of the day. I would also just walk around the streets, check out the Casco Viejo, parks, etc. Also, take the metro out to one of the villages near the sea like Neguri (Ereaga Beach). You can also take a bus to San Sebastian which is beautiful and on the sea. Know that you are coming to one of the greatest places to eat on earth! Enjoy!!! If you have anymore questions please let me know. Best, Marq

PS – I’ll attach a few photographs I took in Bilbao from a recent exhibition I had. Hope these give you some ideas…

  2. Ahahahahaha! Very good! (But why post=process it to monochrome? ..I didn’t even notice the flower which ‘Seal’ is carrying, till I downloaded it and opened it on my Desktop..

    • Hi David,

I’ve been experimenting with monochrome lately and really enjoy its tones. Appreciate your observation on the flower. I agree I could give it more separation from the background. Thanks for the tip!
      All the best,
      Marq
