Daily Inspiration #262 by Chris Adrian Simonsen

Hi Steve!

My name is Chris Simonsen and i am an Norwegian photographer currently living in Western Australia.

I am dropping you a few frames of film to be considered for the Daily Inspiration post, as i was doing some editing and thought i might as well get them «out there» for a change. This series was shot back home in Norway during the previous winter.

One of the guys had spent an awful lot of time on google earth the previous day or so, hoping to find something they could surf. After paddling across the waters, we made our way through the little island on foot, not knowing what we would find.

The spot was a bit rocky, but all in all i think the boys where just stoked on getting some surfing done, even though the weather was rather unpleasant (for us mortals anyways).  I had about five-ten meters of view before the mist enclosed everything, turning it into silhouettes.

The photos where shot on 3200 delta with a Leica M6 Classic and current 50mm Summicron. I really think the combo of snow, mist and high iso-film worked out pretty good, and i am definitely going to shoot more of the 3200, since i am somewhat of a grain-freak.

There are a lot more photos to this series, so i chose three images i thought would compliment each other aesthetically, and hopefully tell a bit of a story at the same time. The rest will be uploaded to my photo-stream as my editing continues.

Anyways, thanks for doing your thing Steve! I follow your site regularly and i much appreciate the work you are putting down in order to contribute to the photographic society! Keep it up, see you around!

Chris.

  1. Thanks Steve, and thank you guys!
    Really appreciate the feedback! 🙂

I was contemplating whether or not to sharpen these a bit more, but decided in the last minute not to do so. Might go a tad bit sharper for print, but you get the general idea. 🙂
In addition i am wondering if the trips through airport x-rays might have contributed to the end result as well. Some claim film over 800 iso might be affected by those things, i dunno.

Michiel: The film was developed in Id-11 if i remember correctly. 🙂

    Cheers!

    Chris

  2. Surfing in Norway, who’d think! I mean that weather looks pretty mean. Great, moody shots though. As others have comments, used well, grain can bring another dimension to photographs. Thanks a lot for sharing.

PS. I assume your in Australia for better surfing weather 🙂

  3. great feel in these photos. Those surfers are some brave men!! Bravo. Keep shooting film my man!
    THanks for sharing

  4. So much for “sharpness”… 🙂

I love these moody images and I love Delta 3200, notwithstanding its limited range of use. What did you process it in? HC110?

  5. Great photographs! They really make me wanna see more. Maybe som grim faces, sweaty brows and satisfied smiles 😉

  6. Must admit I too really like the grainy look, although where possible I prefer to add it in pp if I’m honest. These shots are like historical footage of Scott of the Antarctic of surf boards…….there is a real sense of being there, excellent.

  7. Love it! Some will say that these photographs are unclear, grainy, lacking in contrast. they perfectly convey the mood, the feeling of being there. this is what photography is all about for me and perfectly illustrates why we all need to stop chasing the latest digital wonder-camera. the last photograph made me glad to be in my warm house. thanks for sharing your photographs chris.
